Week 3. Creating Digital Media Piece: pre-production stage.

Task 03
(14 10 11)

The task for the fourth week was to plan and create a simple piece of digital media.
Since it's a very wide area, I had a difficulty to move from a starting point and actually think of something specific. Fortunately, I remembered that I had been given a project to create a leaflet and a calling card of an international children play group to advertise it and attract more people.
There were specific visual needs of what I had to present in the leaflet, for example, ladybird, because the play group's name is "Ladybird".

At first, I thought I was going to do it in a simple way, but after the last lecture it got me thinking that I have to do a serious research to produce the best results. The main things I had to consider were drawings, colours and a typeface. The leaflet had to be very attractive not only to parents, but children as well, because if a child feels uncomfortable looking at some drawing, he/she obviously wouldn't want to go to the presented group. The same thing happens with parents: if a parent doesn't trust the created atmosphere and information given on the leaflet from the first sight, he/she won't even consider bringing the child to the group.

So, I began to do a research about a child psychology and people reactions to colours. First thing I found out was that children don't like when there's a lot of text information, so I decided to leave only the essential info part. Then colours - only from the red spectrum, because according to human perception, these warm colours evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility. Not vivid, but soft, simple tones to keep people in their comfort zone. And finally, drawings: children like to explore, so drawings have to make up some kind of story to make the little ones interested.

As I found out, it's not that easy to make something for children to be interested in, but in the same time keeping it professionally done to make it attractive to parents. Eventually, I have a good start and it will be easier to move into a production stage.

Week 2 - Learning Team Presentations.

WEEK 2 (07 10 11)

The task for the second week was to make a presentation with our group friends about one of the subjects of digital media. We had to consider about what to talk during the presentation, discuss, do a survey about the subjects and wisely contribute tasks among the group members.

There were six groups and unfortunately five of them had done their presentations about Adobe Photoshop. Of course, it is not smart to expect that the most of the groups will not pick the application mentioned above which to do the presentation about. Adobe Photoshop is the application widely known and used, so it is much easier to represent the subject you know, than the subject you barely know.

The group, which had not done the presentation about Photoshop application, did it about 2D Animation. I think, they were clever enough to consider the possibility that everyone will represent the same thing, and they had simply done the different one. And they were right. Actually that was the only group presentation, which I truly enjoyed listening: first of all, their visual aids were very interesting, and that is not just because the group was showing funny animation things, but the reason was that I had a break (as I am sure everyone else did), where I was not forced to look at the same Adobe Photoshop screenshot over and over again, which I think I would describe just awoken in the middle of the night.
Moreover, the guys had talked really clearly and fluently. I know that they are English people - I am the one who is not, but not everyone can present some information and not to bore people around you.

I think that was a problem my group had. And several other groups. Every time we make some kind of presentation in front of other people, we just have to show some energy and interest in that kind of subject we present. Otherwise everyone who listens to us could practically fall asleep, because no one wants to listen to some plane information.

Actually there is a bright side: listening to the plane information gives some benefit. Not everyone using for example Adobe Photoshop can have such an opportunity to hear the origin of the application five times.
